Colon irrigation is the practice of improving peristalsis by cleansing the colon of toxic materials. This encourages natural cleansing ability & normal function of the colon to absorb water & nutrients. This results in a fecal evacuation. A sterile catheter with pulses of warm filtered water is gently inserted into the rectum. Gradually the washing action treats the entire 5 feet of the colon whereas an enema reaches only the first 18 inches. With this gravity fed system, there is less pressure than with a hospital enema. This pulsed irrigation evacuation (PIE) has been used to treat chronic constipation or sluggish bowel movements and fecal impaction in clients with neurologic causes of altered bowel function or clients who have failed conservative episodes of impaction requiring physician intervention.
